傳奇指揮家托斯卡尼尼回憶起他曾經合作過的樂團，將英國BBC交響樂團評價為「全世界最好的交響樂團」。BBC交響樂團將於10月來台演出，由睽違台灣11年的指揮名家安德魯．戴維斯爵士擔任指揮。

今年適逢華格納兩百年冥誕以及布列頓百年誕辰紀念，BBC交響樂團帶來華格納的《唐懷瑟》歌劇序曲、布列頓的鉅作《青少年管弦樂入門》，同場還加映艾爾加氣勢磅礡的《威風凜凜進行曲》等經典曲目。

英國BBC交響樂團隸屬於英國廣播公司BBC，樂團創立緣起於1920年代經濟大蕭條時期，英國人希望擁有一支可媲美柏林愛樂演奏水準的樂團。透過英國廣播公司的資助，樂團毋須擔心演出票房，1930年正式成立。

BBC交響樂團以色彩斑斕的演奏風格聞名，不但擁有無數量身訂做的樂曲，對於推廣現代作品也不遺餘力，至今已為1000多部作品舉辦首演。

BBC交響樂團是每年倫敦夏季逍遙音樂節（Proms）開幕以及閉幕的重頭戲主角，每當樂團演奏艾爾加的《威風凜凜進行曲》，可以見到民眾手持英國國旗，齊聲高唱，儼然是英國「第二國歌」，令人熱血沸騰，這次來台也帶來這曲經典。

此外，樂團這次在台灣還將演出另一首風格迥異的《謎語變奏曲》，這是艾爾加以朋友的特徵和名字組成主題的管弦樂代表作。

主辦單位牛耳藝術負責人牛效華表示，今年是「華格納年」，樂團這次也特別納入華格納的歌劇經典《唐懷瑟》序曲，而布列頓的《青少年管弦樂入門》則是認識交響樂的重要經典，也是作曲家的聖經，另外還將演出布列頓的《彼得．格林》間奏曲〈海〉。

率團來台的指揮安德魯．戴維斯目前是芝加哥抒情歌劇院音樂總監兼首席指揮，同時也是澳洲墨爾本交響樂團首席指揮、多倫多交響樂團的名譽指揮。他擅長的曲目從古典時期到現代音樂都涵蓋，風格節奏感鮮明、手法明快，也善於表現柔美動人氛圍。

戴維斯在BBC交響樂團擔任指揮12年，樂團推出許多20世紀作曲家作品，這是其他樂團少見的，打造出獨樹一格的形象。由於貢獻卓著，戴維斯卸任後，樂團頒發給他「桂冠指揮」頭銜。

英國BBC交響樂團來台音樂會10月11日在台北國家音樂廳、12日於台南文化中心演出。

BBC Symphony Orchestra

The BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO) is a British orchestra based in London. Founded in 1930, it was the first permanent salaried orchestra in London, and is the only one of the city's five major symphony orchestras not to be self-governing. The BBC SO is the principal orchestra of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The orchestra was originally conceived in 1928 as a joint enterprise by the BBC and the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, but the latter withdrew the next year; and the task of assembling and training the orchestra fell to the BBC's director of music, Adrian Boult. Among its guest conductors in its first years was Arturo Toscanini, who judged it the finest orchestra he had ever conducted. During and after the Second World War, Boult strove to maintain standards, but the senior management of the post-war BBC did not allocate the orchestra the resources to meet competition from new and well-funded rivals.

After Boult's retirement from the BBC in 1950, the orchestra went through a fallow period. Boult's successor, Sir Malcolm Sargent, was popular with the public but had poor rapport with his players, and orchestral morale dropped. Sargent's successor, Rudolf Schwarz, made little public impact, and although the BBC appointed high-profile chief conductors in the 1960s and 70s – Antal Doráti, Colin Davis, Pierre Boulez and Gennady Rozhdestvensky – the BBC SO remained underfunded and could not attract enough good players to rival the leading London orchestras.
As a result of initiatives begun in the 1960s by the BBC controller of music William Glock, performing standards gradually began to rise. Under Andrew Davis in the 1990s and Jiří Bělohlávek in the 2000s the orchestra prospered. By the second decade of the 21st century the BBC SO was once again regarded by critics as of first-class status. From the outset the orchestra has been known for pioneering new music, and it continues to do so, at the Proms, in concerts at the Barbican Centre, and in studio concerts from its base at BBC Maida Vale studios.

Andrew Davis (conductor)

Sir Andrew Frank Davis[1] CBE (born 2 February 1944) is a British conductor. He is currently music director and principal conductor of Lyric Opera of Chicago, chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of both the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Ashridge, Hertfordshire to Robert J. Davis and his wife Florence J. (née Badminton), Davis grew up in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, and in Watford.[2] Davis attended Watford Boys' Grammar School, where he studied classics in his sixth form years. His adolescent musical work included playing the organ at the Palace Theatre, Watford.[2] Davis studied at the Royal College of Music and King's College, Cambridge where he was an Organ Scholar, graduating in 1967. He later studied conducting in Rome with Franco Ferrara.

Davis's first major post was as associate conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, beginning in 1970. In 1975, he became music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). He held the post until 1988, and then took the title of Conductor Laureate with the TSO.
In 1988, Davis became music director at Glyndebourne, where he met the American soprano Gianna Rolandi, who became his third wife.[3] Davis concluded his Glyndebourne tenure in 2000. In 1989, Sir John Drummond appointed Davis as chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO).[4] During his BBC SO tenure, Davis restored the tradition established by Malcolm Sargent of the chief conductor of the BBC SO conducting the Last Night of The Proms. He was noted for his humorous Last Night speeches, including giving two speeches after the Major-General's patter song from The Pirates of Penzance,[2][5] but he also more seriously addressed the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, Mother Teresa, and Sir Georg Solti in his 1997 Last Night speech.[6] Davis stepped down as the BBC SO's chief conductor in 2000 and now holds the title of conductor laureate of the BBC SO.

In May 1992, Davis was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and in the 1999 New Year Honours List he was appointed Knight Bachelor. In 2002, he conducted the Prom at the Palace concert, held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Davis became the music director and principal conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2000. His work in Chicago has included his first conducting of Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle of Richard Wagner in 2005[7] and the first Chicago production of Michael Tippett's The Midsummer Marriage.[8] His current contract with Lyric Opera of Chicago is through the 2020-2021 season.[9]

In 2005, Davis became Music Advisor to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, for a designated three-year period. In September 2006, he announced that he would relinquish this position with Pittsburgh after the 2007-2008 season.[10] In October 2007, Davis and the orchestra mutually agreed to terminate his contract early and for him not to conduct his scheduled Pittsburgh Symphony concerts in the 2007-2008 season, because of increased demands on his schedule.[11] Outside of the USA, in June 2012, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra named Davis its chief conductor, effective in January 2013, with an initial contract of 4 years.[12]

Davis has performed a wide range of repertoire, with a particular focus on contemporary British music. He is particularly associated with Michael Tippett,[13] including the British premiere of his work The Mask of Time. Davis has recorded for a number of labels, including NMC Recordings, Teldec and Deutsche Grammophon.[14] He has also made a critically acclaimed recording of Harrison Birtwistle's opera, The Mask of Orpheus.
