彼此的距離-----Dennis Humphrey

這是一個關於生物與人類，文化，觀念與想法上所存在的距離，障礙，容忍與改變的故事。

安卓與赫米斯是特藍星人，那是一個遙遠銀河系中又小又單一的行星。

他們的世界太擁擠了，其他的特藍星單性者似乎不再接受或容忍多性者，因為他們結構上是不同的。

這些其他特藍星單性者有男性與女性，他們的外貌，行為模式與穿著都非常不同，他們兩兩生活在一起，並組成家庭。

然而安卓與赫米斯以及其他特藍星多性人是雌雄同體者，生理上看起來他們不是男性也不是女性，介於典型的男女特性之間，其性徵會隨著其意志改變。

如果願意的話，他們能夠自我複製，他們時常與另一個多性者一輩子在一起，組成一個家庭，相互陪伴。

面對著漸漸增加的特藍星單性者的仇視，多性者決定離開特藍星，探索銀河系中其他的星球。尋找願意讓他們以自己的本然面貌棲身落腳的祥和之境。

多性者的皮膚有能夠掃描吸收與反射其所處環境的色素體，能夠顯示不同的社會的，生理的，心理的狀況，這些生理特質以及相互連結的狀況會被轉或成記憶。之後，這些記憶能夠被回想，陳列與分享。

安卓與赫米斯經歷了時空之旅，希望找尋能夠生活的地方，他們降落在地球上，他們看到地球自然面貌的第一眼是滿月而佈滿雲朵之夜，最後，他們到達了台北。

天籟：追求幸福 無需他言------張雲凱 Chang, Yun-kai

天籟，出自偉大哲學家莊子的齊物論，是大自然所發出的聲音，不藉任何人為所産生的聲音。齊物論中，莊子提到了地籟和人籟，和天籟三種聲音，代表著三種不同的心靈層次。

天籟，是自然界各種聲響的集合。他們之間相互和鳴，沒有競爭，沒有勝負，沒有高低，沒有好壞。

人們總因個人的觀點去批判，大自然不會。

大自然不帶有偏見，讓人們自由的生活，表達自我，各自追求各自的幸福。

台北的大自然歡迎安卓與赫米斯以及其他多性者，台北的大自然是個接受多元和差異的和諧之境。

這個展覽帶出的意念是我們可以接受異己的做法，如此能夠拉近彼此之間的距離，並且和諧地追求各自的幸福。

阿凱與丹尼斯的攝影一起展出，這些攝影作品表達安卓與赫米斯的思想與莊子的自然主義，以及安卓等人在地球上碰到的故事。

Exhibition Theme

Spaces in Between  —  Dennis Humphrey 

This is a story of spaces, differences, barriers, tolerance and change—spaces between living beings and people, cultures, beliefs and ideas.

Andros and Hermis are Terran "kins" who have lived all of their lives on Terra Verda (Green Earth), a small, lonely planet in a distant galaxy.

Their world has become overcrowded. All other Terran “non-kins“ no longer seem to accept or tolerate the kins  because they are different.

These other Terran non-kins are of male or female gender, both of which look, act and dress very differently. They form couples for companionship or reproduction, and to raise a family.

However, Andros, Hermis and their Terran kins are androgynes. Physically they look neither male nor female since each kin's gender identity is fluid, sliding at will between the typical gender extremities.

They are able to self-reproduce if they wish and often form lifelong bonds with another kin, for companionship or to raise their families together.

Faced with increasing reprisal and rejection by the non-kin Terrans, the kins have decided to leave Terra Verde and explore other planets and galaxies, in search of a space that would allow them to live as they are, in greater peace and harmony.

The skin of the kins contains chromatophores that scan, absorb and reflect the environment around them, evoking or invoking different social, physical or mental states. These bioscapes and their associated states can be stored as memories. Later, the markings can be recalled, displayed and shared with others.

Andros and Hermis have been travelling in space and time throughout the galaxies in search of a new place to live. On this night, they have landed on Earth under a cloudy moon-filled sky. It is their first glimpse of nature on the planet Earth. They have finally arrived in Taipei.

 

 Sound of Nature — Chang, Yun-kai

The Sound of Nature is based on a story (齊物論) by the great Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi. This is the most natural sound created by nature. The story is about three kinds of sounds — they represent three different spiritual levels*.

The Sound of Nature is where all sounds in the world come together. There is no competition, no winning or losing, no higher or lower, no better or worse.

 

 

People always judge according to their opinions; nature does not. Nature has no prejudice and allows us to live in our own way, to express ourselves in our own way.

 

In Taipei, Nature welcomes Andros, Hermis and other kins to a more harmonious home that accepts diversity and difference.

This exhibition evokes the idea that we can accept practices that are different from the way we think. This will narrow the spaces between us.

 

Story

Akai's and Dennis' photos are grouped in pairs along the walls of the gallery. They form a story that expresses Andros', Hermis' and Nature's thoughts and observations during their encounter on Earth.

*Zhuangzi discusses two other levels of sound: the sound of  people (人籟) and the sound of the ground (地籟).

 

Artist Statements 攝影師簡介

 

張雲凱 Chang, Yun-kai 

張雲凱興趣廣泛，尤其攝影與宗教兩方面特別投入。

攝影是他從十六七歲延伸至今的興趣，從而以光影為業，目前在台北有個宏圖攝影棚，此外他從事教學工作，舉凡手機攝影，商業攝影，人像攝影等等都有，年齡層從小學三年級的小萌孩到屆退年齡的哥哥姊姊。

他喜歡分享他的攝影修道論，認為攝影與自淨其意很像，修行的要旨是斷除煩惱，使當下幸福湧現，因此必須先看清煩惱，而煩惱像個小賊隱藏於內，需要專注與覺察揪出，經由處理粗的煩惱，到慢慢拔除細微煩惱的過程，近似於自然攝影與生活攝影，從拍攝令人驚艷的大景開始，進而發現日常的韻味與因緣聚合的美，如此的話即使用手機攝影app也能拍出佳構．此次展出的也均是手機在台灣城市鄉間所拍攝。

他目前與太太小孩生活在台北市，三個人繼續其探索之旅。

 

Akai is interested in photography and the Buddhist way of self purification.

 

As a photographer at Hondo Studio, he started taking photos at the age of 17. After finishing his PhD in the field of Buddhism, he began to teach photography. He noticed that both of these areas were similar because they pay attention to detail.

 

People cannot discover tiny impurities unless they look inside calmly. Then they can point them out and get rid of them. Just like a cameraman always pays attention to the wonderful combination of light and shadow in ordinary life, he can take a nice shot, even with a cellphone camera.

 

The pictures for this exhibition are about ordinary life and were taken by Akai with a cellphone camera. That is the reason he is so fond of photography and buddhism.

 

Akai lives in Taipei with his wife and their son. With exploring hearts, they keep travelling their life journey. 

 

Dennis Humphrey

Dennis is a visual artist, photographer, poet and book artist.

 

His photographic works are digital composites. Each photo combines elements from many photographs. For this series, he captured and collected images with his mobile smart devices.

 

Dennis’ work explores the interplay of light, darkness, colour, translucency, blurriness and textures, skins, layers and folds. He uses images of the faces, hands, body and nature as canvases to evoke characters from other worlds. Notions of identity, sensuality, rebirth and transformation imbue these liminal worlds.

 

Also interested in the book arts, he has written and illustrated, designed and printed, several handmade and print-on-demand books featuring his art and poetry.

 

He lives in Vancouver, Canada with his partner, and continues to make photos and books.

 

丹尼斯是一位視覺藝術家，攝影師，詩人和書本藝術家。

他的攝影作品是以數張攝影作品作為數位元素加以組合而成，此次展出的這個系列他是以數位移動智能裝備拍攝與集合而成。

丹尼斯的藝術作品嘗試著探索明暗，色彩，漸層，模糊，紋理，表面質感，層次與轉折等等。他利用臉，手與身體和自然生物的影像當作點出其作品中異界風格的畫布。個體觀念，感官衝擊，重生與轉變等意涵浸潤著其創作的場閾。

他對於書本藝術也很有興趣，他已完成數本客製化的手作書，其書的設計，其中的詩句，文字與手繪圖像均出於他一人之手。

他與他的伴侶居住在加拿大溫哥華，繼續其攝影與書本創作的生活。
